Charity is not just about giving away money. Since 2006 the Company has been supporting Eco projects at Ysgol y gogarth: see the latest report , while we have also supported - again - the Hackney Carriage Drivers' Company visit to Disneyland for sick children
A new no-cost project is underway with the help of AIDU at Ruislip school, who are installing a pond - with the physical assistance of the RAF and technical expertise from us. At the Michealmas lunch, a collection was traken to provide some 'extras' for the pond - without digging into the Water Conservation Trust's coffers. A recent report from Wg Cdr Charles Vyse stated: "There is a recce party being inserted under cover of daylight on Friday morning with Chief Water Technician Brophy and Lord High Water Hall in attendance as well as Penny Maas the Resident Teacher, her School Facilities Manager, and myself as OC Digging Party. We will wave hands about, suck our teeth, and drink lots of tea before reporting back late with photos of our feet or the inside of the lens cap."
The Water Conservation
Trust is the Company's Charity.Sometimes the help it provides pays enormous dividends.
An episode with the Calvert Trust provides an extraordinarily moving, graphic and inspirational example:. "A father's story" is a wonderful piece, and we publish it with permission.
The Trust is supervised by six trustees. Although
they are members of the Company, they act independently of it and are
personally responsible for the well being of the Charity under the law.
The Trust's main objects are to further education and research in the
water cycle and the environment, with a view to its conservation, and
also to assist those in the industry with financial need.
One
of the earliest of the Company's educational initiatives, the Pupil's
Prizes scheme, is increasingly being taken up by schools via any Company
member. The scheme encourages children, at any school in the UK, in
their study of water and conservation, by offering prizes for their
water and environmental projects. (Follow the various links for further
information)
Another initiative,
but within the higher education sphere, is our Water Conservation Bursaries. These are aimed at supporting post-graduate university students in the
study of water and conservation topics.
Relevant
post graduate and MSc projects are also supported by the award of Dissertation
Prizes and Dissertation support Grants.
The Tony Drake Travelling Scholarship is
offered bi-annually to younger members of CIWEM, the industry's professional institution, (see links) to support relevant
overseas study projects.
Numerous other prizes, scholarships and awards
have been made by the Trust since its foundation. For example, in the
past the Trust helped to establish the Chair in Pipeline Technology
at the University of East London and supported the Shoals of Capricorn research Project. More recently we have given grants to the Calvert Trust and Ysgol Gogarth where we’ve assisted in the raising of environmental awareness in young people and children with disabilities.
Awards continue to be made each year
to many organisations, some of which have well established links with
the Company whilst others are quite separate from it.

The Water Conservation
Trust also assists annually in financing placements of members of the
Military Works Force to attend the CIWEM young members study, and provides
other support for our other armed services affiliations, and the Trust
also assists individual cadets from the Maidstone Sea Cadets to attend
a tour of duty on board HMS Scott.
